Roberto Firmino has reportedly expressed a desire to sign a new contract with Liverpool and remain at Anfield past the expiration date on his current deal – at the end of this season. The talks between the player and the club are ongoing, with the length of the proposed new deal being discussed.
Firmino has been one of the most important players for everything the Merseyside club achieved under Jurgen Klopp so far. A special player of special characteristics, one who has chiseled the ‘false nine’ role to perfection to enable Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane to shine the way they did for years. Manager Jurgen Klopp himself has repeatedly stressed the significance of the Brazilian forward for the way he wanted his team to play as they won every trophy on offer together.
But Liverpool are obviously in need of a squad overhaul, looking rather poorly this season, and having signed the likes of Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo since winning the Premier League title in 2020, there are those who doubt Liverpool need the services of 31-year-old Firmino any longer.
Nonetheless, Firmino has been one of Liverpool’s best players this season, netting nine goals and contributing four assists in 21 appearances across all competitions, until he picked up a calf injury last month.
