After securing Champions League football last season, Marseille have once again started the new campaign brightly and Les Phocéens will travel to the Stade des Costières to face off against newly promoted Nimes on Sunday.

Starting with the hosts, while Bernard Blaquart’s Nimes side did come up from Ligue 2 after an impressive season last year, many predicted that the jump up in class could be to much for Sunday’s hosts. Involved in the opening game of the weekend last time out, while they may have shipped three against Angers last Saturday, they did come away with a dramatic 4-3 win and their first three points of the season. Although they have only lost one of their last five, their defensive issues will be a concern to Blaquart. Nimes have now shipped nine in their last five and could struggle against Marseille on Sunday.

As for the visitors, booking a Top Four finish with plenty of time to spare last season, spirits are high around the Stade Vélodrome. Picking up a commanding 4-0 win in their Ligue 1 opener against Toulouse, while captain Dimitri Payet may have scored a brace last weekend, one man to watch for Les Phocéens is last years top scorer Florian Thauvin. The one-time Newcastle flop scored 22 Ligue 1 goals last season and only fell behind Edison Cavani in the overall goalscoring charts. Finding the net in their 4-0 win last weekend, we’re backing the 25-year-old to carry on his impressive start to the new year.
