Fluminense hero Emerson paid tribute to the club’s supporters after his side won the Brazilian Serie A title on Sunday.

Fluminense led the title race by one point heading into the last fixture of the season and a 1-0 triumph over Guarani sealed the club’s first title in 26 years.

Striker Emerson scored the all-important goal after 62 minutes to recap a remarkable 12 months for the Rio de Janeiro club who narrowly avoided relegation last season.

“It’s a goal that everyone will remember for 15, 20, 30 years,” Emerson said afterwards.

“It’s hard to explain all this, particularly since our discussion could have been completely different.”

“This crowd deserves this title, it has been 26 years, not 26 weeks or 26 months. It’s now time for Fluminense’s fans to celebrate – it has been a long time without joy.”

Midfielder Dario Conca was instrumental in the title win and paid tribute to the club’s fans and players.

“The fans, the group, everyone was very important. I am very happy. I hope that Fluminense will be champions many more times,” Conca said.

Coach Muricy Ramalho was noticeably relieved to lift the pressure of a 26-year title drought off his club’s shoulders.

“26 years without winning is a great pressure,” Ramalho said.

“For those who are accustomed to winning, 26 years generates huge anxiety within the club. Fluminense deserve this and this will help to improve the club.”

Real Madrid star Kaka also paid tribute to Ramalho and Fluminense.

“From shame to honour in a year. Congratulations, Fluminense and Muricy Ramalho,” Kaka posted on his official twitter feed.
