With the World Cup completing it’s first round of matches and Spain joining the list of big guns who have under performed I thought I would look outside of the tournament for my article today.
On looking around the news I found a story that I find very strange indeed. It has emerged that American rap star Diddy very nearly became the owner of English Championship side Crystal Palace.
There is no doubt that Diddy has the money as it has been estimated that he earns £21 million a year, but how on earth did he come to be so nearly involved in English football?
Speaking to the BBC, Diddy explained what had happened,
“There was somebody that had looked at it but the business of it just wasn’t the right business move for me at the time. I’m always looking into different business ventures and it’s definitely one of my dreams one day to be a part of a sports franchise, especially a football team. If the right situation comes my way and it’s appealing and we can make the right splash and most importantly build the right team and win.. I’m into winning and if it’s the right situation then I’m open to it.”
It could be the winning bit that Diddy off of Crystal Palace as they avoided relegation to League One on the final day of last season!
That is actually totally unfair on the club who were deducted ten points after going into administration when they looked like a decent bet for the play-offs and then lost their best players and their manager.
Desperate
Come the end of the season Crystal Palace were desperate for a buyer and came ever so close to being liquidated. It was only last week that a buyout by a consortium named CPFC 2010 was agreed and the club was saved.
Diddy, who was formerly known as P Diddy and Puff Daddy, would certainly have found the somewhat staid boardrooms of English football clubs an interesting place to be. Quite how the chairmen of the other Championship clubs would have reacted to him I can’t imagine. I certainly remember the furore when Elton John became Watford chairman.
Business
Diddy, real name Sean Combs, already has a number of business interests under the umbrella of Bad Boy Entertainment. This includes Bad Boy records, the clothing line Sean John, a movie production company; and two restaurants. Back in 2006 his net worth was estimated at US$ 346 million.
