Diego Forlan hopes his surname will go down in history after he became the third generation of his family to lift the Copa America.
Forlan struck twice in Uruguay’s 3-0 win over Paraguay in Sunday’s final at Estadio Monumental Antonio Vespucio Liberti.
A record 15th South American continental title for Uruguay and their first since 1995, it was Atletico Madrid striker Forlan’s first Copa triumph.
And the two goals he netted in Buenos Aires – his first of the tournament – means he follows in the footsteps of father Pablo Forlan and grandfather Juan Carlos Corazo, both of whom won the competition for Uruguay.
“This really means a lot for me because my grandfather won it, my father won it and now I have also done it,” Forlan said.
“Three generations have won this trophy. The name of Forlan will stay in history.”
“It was a complicated match, we knew it, but the team played well. The goals and the way Uruguay started out, helped us.”
“We are happy, for all of Uruguay, for everyone, to celebrate.”
Forlan was the beneficiary of a strong performance from strike partner Luis Suarez of Liverpool, who opened the scoring and later set up the third.
“We really wanted this,” Suarez said.
“We are a united group and we deserved it. We had to fight like crazy to win this and we’ve achieved something great.”
“We have a huge joy to give this title to our people, this is an indescribable feeling.”
“We knew Paraguay were a tough opponent but the important thing was that we started the first half well, we scored twice and that was crucial.”
“It was hard for them to make a comeback.”
And Uruguay captain Diego Lugano echoed the sentiments of his victorious teammates.
“I’m really proud of the way we played and the way we did it,” Lugano said.
“You cannot imagine how I feel. We’ve made a lot of people very happy.”
