MLS side Philadelphia Union have announced the signing of forward Freddy Adu on a free transfer.

The 22-year-old has been a free agent since being released from his contract at Benfica and has now decided to return home following several disappointing spells in European clubs.

The former United States international will be reunited with coach Peter Nowak at Philadelphia and will be hoping to kick-start his career in the MLS.

Freddy Adu made history in 2004 when he was handed his professional debut at the age of 14 by DC United before becoming the youngest ever MLS scorer just two weeks later.

The player’s career has taken the wrong turn following his transfer to Benfica and he has now decided to return home and accept the offer from Philadelphia Union.

Despite his fragile age, Adu has amassed 17 United States caps, scoring two goals in the process.
