Former Chilean international Fernando Cornejo has died at the age of 39 due to stomach cancer.
The midfielder, born in the Chilean town of Rengo, began his career at O’Higgins in 1990 and played for Cobreloa and Universidad before returning to Cobreloa. He retired from professional football in 2004.
Cornejo played 33 games for Chile’s national team, scoring twice. One of these goals was the important equalizer versus Argentina that eventually helped Chile reach the 1998 World Cup. The player also appeared in all of his country’s group games at that tournament.
Cornejo leaves a wife and three children.
