Former Giant Burress walks free

Former New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress has walked free from a US Prison after serving almost two years on a gun charge.

Burress was indicted in a US court in 2009, after he accidentally shot himself in the thigh, as the firearm he was carrying discharged in a New York nightclub.

At the time of his sentence, Burress was regarded as one of the most damaging offensive players in the NFL as he formed a damaging combination with Giants quarterback Eli Manning.

He was a key contributor in New York’s 2007 Super Bowl win in which he caught a touchdown pass from Manning with 35 seconds left on the clock to all but assure his team victory.

Burress will be one of the most sought after free agents this season, and his agent Drew Rosenhaus has confirmed NFL teams are interested in the wide receiver.

The impending league lockout however – that threatens to disrupt the 2011-2012 season – will not affect Burress’ preparation.

“As far as football is concerned, if and when everything gets settled, when they get back on the field, I’ll be ready,” Burress said.

It is unlikely Burress will be reunited with his old team the Giants, with the Philadelphia Eagles the favourites to secure his services.

Upon his release, Burress said he was relieved to be finished his time in jail.

“It’s a beautiful day. It’s a beautiful day to be reunited with my family. I want to go home and spend some quality time with them,” Burress said.
