MLS club Chicago Fire have announced the signing of Mexican star Nery Castillo from Ukrainian outfit Shakhtar Donetsk. The club also unveiled Castillo as their designated player, meaning that his salary will not count towards the salary cap imposed upon the team.
Fire have the option to make Castillo’s arrival at Toyota Park a permanent one. Other details of the transfer were not announced by the club.
Castillo, who can play both as an attacking midfielder as well as a striker, started his career with Uruguayan outfit Danubio and joined Greek giants Olympiakos at the tender age of 16. His performances at Olympiakos earned him a big money move to Shakhtar, but he was not able to settle down at the Ukrainian club. He had loan spells at Manchester City and Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk before joining Fire.
