Former Rangers captain and Scotland manager Ian McColl has died aged 81, the Scottish Premier League club announced Saturday.
Wing-half McColl, who became captain of the Glasgow giants in the 1950s, won six titles, five Scottish Cups and two League Cups during the course of his 15-year career at Ibrox.
He was also a member of Rangers’s celebrated ‘Iron Curtain’ defence which conceded an average of under a goal a game during a 10-year period.
McColl became Scotland manager in 1961 and saw the national side win 16 of his 27 games in charge, including a 2-1 victory over England at Wembley in 1963 where Scotland great Jim Baxter scored twice for the visitors.
In 1965 McColl took over at Sunderland and brought Baxter to Roker Park but neither man enjoyed as much success south of the border as they had in Scotland.
