Fowler exits Perth Glory

Former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler has quit Perth Glory to return to England due to family reasons.

Glory chairman Tony Sage on Wednesday announced Fowler had reneged on a verbal agreement and would not return to Western Australia for the 2011/12 A-League season.

The 36-year-old joined Perth from fellow A-League side North Queensland Fury in 2010, scoring nine goals in his only season for the club.

The striker said the decision not to play a second season in the west had been extremely tough to make.

“I have a wonderful and loving family to consider and with the children in school, it’s best to keep them settled,” Fowler said in a statement.

“I also need to stay in the UK to complete my coaching badges.”

“I thank everyone at Perth Glory and in Western Australia for making me feel so welcome and I wish Ian Ferguson and the players all the best for the coming season,” Fowler said.

Sage said the veteran was not in discussions with any other clubs and while disappointed with the decision, he respected Fowler for his professionalism.

“Robbie has put Perth Glory on the world map and while I would’ve loved to have him here for a second season, as a husband and father I understand that his family comes first,” Sage said.

“I also appreciate the fact that Robbie called me personally to tell me of his decision.”

“Robbie will always be welcomed into the Perth Glory family and I can’t thank him enough for his contribution to the football club.”

Fowler could return to Perth for the international friendly against Celtic on July 9 as a special guest of the Glory.
