While we all tend to focus our attention on what’s happening at the very elite level in the professional game, it’s also important to keep an eye on the future – and with that in mind, we head to the ongoing UEFA Euro 2022 under-19 championship.
Last night, in what proved to be a really fun semi-final, Israel U19 booked their place in the final with a nice 2-1 win over France U19.
Israel have heart
The great thing about this Israel team is that they take their time and know how to stay composed. They were viewed as the underdogs but after waiting for their moment to strike, they managed to build up a 2-0 lead thanks to an own goal and a solid finish from El Yam Kancepolsky.
No French killer instinct
France had the better crop of players and the lion’s share of possession but unfortunately for them, they just weren’t able to do a whole lot with it. They were a bit trigger shy and even worse when they did get a shot off, and despite pulling one back, they never really seemed to be too threatening.
England = the favourites?
England did well to edge past Italy in their own semi-final and as a result, we’d probably make the argument that they should be the favourites – but that’ll play right into Israel’s hands. They’re gritty, they’re determined, and we back them to make some serious waves in the final.
