Bayern Munich’s French international defender Willy Sagnol is to quit football after failing to recover from an Achilles tendon injury, the German side’s president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has told Friday’s newspapers.

“It’s not important what he did in training or how he trained, sadly Willy still felt pain in the Achilles,” Rummenigge told the Suddeutsche Zeitung.

Sagnol hasn’t played since Euro 2008 where France were eliminated in the first round after injuring the tendon in the summer.

The right-back, who joined Bayern in 2000 after playing with St Etienne and Monaco, won five German league titles and the Champions League in 2001.
