As reported by the Mirror, Frenkie de Jong has revealed what would have been his preferred alternatives had he not moved to Barcelona this summer.
The midfielder was a target for a host of top European sides before it became known he had agreed to move to the Camp Nou, but Barcelona clearly acted quickly enough to secure his signature ahead of all competition. He is seen as a long-term successor to Sergio Busquets at the Catalan club, a role which suits his style perfectly.
But had it not turned out so, he would have chosen either Manchester City or Paris Saint-Germain as his next step from Ajax. City boss Pep Guardiola was long searching for a successor to Fernandinho, and it’s not hard to imagine De Jong flourishing at the Etihad as well as at Barcelona. PSG were in a similar situation having lost the services of Adrien Rabiot who joined Juventus as a free agent.
