Gary Speed’s first game in charge of Wales will be one he is keen to forget after his side slumped to a 3-0 defeat against Ireland in Dublin.
Second-half goals from Darron Gibson, Damien Duff and Keith Fahey saw Ireland claim a convincing win against a Welsh outfit missing the likes of Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey and Craig Bellamy.
Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni will be buoyed by the impressive international debuts of Everton midfielder Seamus Coleman and Aston Villa defender Ciaran Clark, both of whom started the match.
Elsewhere on Tuesday, first-half goals from Tobias Hysen and Marcus Berg were enough to hand Sweden a 2-0 win over Cyprus in Nicosia, while Euro 2012 co-hosts Ukraine needed a penalty shoot-out to defeat Romania after their match ended 2-2 after 90 minutes.
Ukraine were 2-0 up after 30 minutes courtesy of goals to Yaroslav Rakitskiy and Artem Milevskiy, but a brace from Dan Alexa levelled proceedings before the interval.
