The general expectation coming into this one was that while Tottenham Hotspur would struggle despite not having their best attacking options available, but they’d still have enough to overcome the challenge of struggling Fulham. In the end you could certainly argue it turned out that way, but it’s worth repeating that the Cottagers certainly put up a fight in what was an entertaining Premier League showdown.
Great start, poor finish
Fulham started really well and went straight at the throat of Tottenham, which led to a somewhat unfortunate turn of events – for the visitors, that is. Fernando Llorente, who was brought into the starting XI to replace Son and Kane in their absence, scored an own goal to put Spurs right up against it.
Fulham went on to push forward in search of a second, with Mitrovic netting before being informed that he was offside. Alas, if they’d have managed to get the second goal then things likely would’ve turned out very differently, but that didn’t wind up being the case.
Typical Spurs
Tottenham came out like a house on fire with Dele Alli heading home the equaliser, in a very similar manner to his goal against Sweden for England in the World Cup. From that point on it felt like Fulham were second guessing everything they did, whereas Spurs were just waiting for their moment to strike. That moment came in injury time, as Harry Winks got down low to meet a nice cross and ensure that Spurs were still in the driving seat in the race for a top four spot.
Fulham will next be back in action in nine days time when they host Brighton & Hove Albion. Spurs, on the other hand, will face Chelsea in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi final tie.
