Fulham 2-2 Ipswich Town: Jimenez scores two penalties in dramatic draw

Three penalties were scored as Fulham and Ipswich Town played out a dramatic 2-2 Premier League draw, with Raul Jimenez netting twice from the spot to earn the hosts a point at Craven Cottage.

Ipswich initially went ahead when Sammie Szmodics pounced on a poor Calvin Bassey clearance late in the first half, but the rest of the game was decided from the spot.

Jimenez slotted home the first spot-kick in the 69th minute after Sam Morsy trod on Harry Wilson’s foot, but Ipswich were back in front just two minutes later.

Liam Delap was fouled by Timothy Castagne on the left side of the Fulham area, and Ipswich’s leading scorer picked himself up to blast home his eighth league goal of the season.

That put Ipswich on course for their first set of back-to-back Premier League wins this term, but Leif Davis’ tired challenge on Jimenez allowed him to net his second penalty in the 91st minute.

The result denied Ipswich the opportunity to escape the relegation zone, and the Tractor Boys remain behind 17th-placed Wolves on goal difference. Fulham, meanwhile, stay ninth in the table, two points adrift of Aston Villa in eighth.

Data Debrief: Tale of three penalties

Sunday’s game was the first in the Premier League to see three penalties taken, including at least one for each team, since Fulham’s 3-2 win over Wolves in November 2023.

Just two minutes and 44 seconds elapsed between Jimenez’s first penalty being scored and Delap putting Ipswich 2-1 ahead. That is the shortest gap on record (since 2006-07) between two successful penalties in a Premier League match.

However, Ipswich could not hold on as Davis – who escaped a red card for a clumsy challenge on Wilson in the first half – felled Jimenez.

Having gone to the left with his first kick, Jimenez went right with his second, and only Cole Palmer (12/12) and Yaya Toure (11/11) have a better 100% conversion rate from the penalty spot in Premier League history than the Mexico striker (10/10).
