Gaitan nears Manchester United switch

Portuguese media outlet Record is reporting that Manchester United are closing in on Benfica winger Nicolas Gaitan.

The Eagles plan to offload their star player this summer and the Red Devils appear to be leading the chase for his services.

According to Record, Manchester United are prepared to match Benfica’s €35 million asking price, but they are not yet ready to wrap up the deal.

Namely, the Red Devils expect to cash in on Angel Di Maria and are unlikely to recruit Nicolas Gaitan until the former Real Madrid hotshot leaves Old Trafford.

The problem is that few more top clubs are showing interest in Gaitan, although it remains to be seen whether any of those will attempt to hijack United’s bid.

The Argentine footballer, 27, has spent last five years at Estadio da Luz, scoring 30 goals and producing 67 assists in 214 competitive outings for the Portuguese giants.
