“While we’re generally opposed to any sort of invasions, the amusement factor of an ogre taking over a village and making a throne out of the houses was too much to pass up.”

There isn’t much consistency when it comes to portraying ogres. The key traits of being big, powerful and stupid seem to be the core tenets, but apart from that, they’ve faced numerous renditions as each author and artist seemed to have their own vision on what an ogre is. When looking at the smug look on this ogre’s face, we can’t help but feel that Betsoft might have gotten their impression from Shrek. That is, if Shrek was much taller, and instead of living in his swamp, he preferred rooftops of houses. And so he rules tyrannically over the day, but by night, a whole other world pops up.
Launched in May 2018, Ogre Empire is a 5-reel 3-row video slot with 25 fixed paylines. The title has several special features locked behind a day and night cycle. Over the day, the ogre will help you score some good wins. At night, however, the displaced royalty will come out of hiding, and for your assistance in taking back their kingdom, they have their own set of bonuses to help you with.
Tyrannical overlords and benevolent royalty alike must govern their realm properly, and part of that is making sure your budget is up to snuff. The coin denomination goes from $0.01 up to $1.00, and the wager itself can be set between $0.25 up to $25 per spin. This is a nice spread that should cover most players except high rollers who want to bet even more per spin and low-end players for who $0.25 per spin might be asking too much.
The list of game icons include some blocks with letters A, K, Q and J on them, a mushroom, a large bat the ogre uses, a stack of golden coins, a bowl full of gemstones, the ogre himself, a large and a sizeable, sparkling diamond. Alongside these, during the night time cycle, the letter-blocks are replaced with actual, unique symbols – the jester, the queen, and the king. The official story is that the royals are hiding among the blocks – which makes one of the features rather interesting.
A large, green flower with the word Wild written on top of it acts as the slot’s Wild. It doesn’t have it’s own cash prize, but it plays part of the Sun Bloom and Night Bloom Wild flowers, which are expanding flowers which turn three or five additional symbols Wild, respectively. And if you’re hunting for Scatter, you sadly won’t be able to find it, as Betsoft chose to go without any free spin bonuses or Scatters in their release.
There are different features depending on the time of day. This switches when the large Moon symbol appears in full on the third reel during daytime and pays 6x the wager or when the large Sun icon appears fully on the third reel during nighttime and pays 4x the wager. During the day, the ogre can at random choose to strike at the reels, crushing the stone icons and allowing new symbols to fall into their place.
During night time, the Joker, Queen and King symbols appear, replacing the minor paying letter blocks. Their prizes are much higher and with the addition of the Night Bloom Wild flowers that we already mentioned, can deliver some sizeable wins.

"This whole title is one big exercise Betsoft trying to woo us in. Rolling reels, different features depending on the time of day and the potential for a big, juicy score are all there. Ogre Empire is a title worthy of all attention you can give it."
