“As a general rule of thumb, we usually avoid putting our opinion outside of the score and verdict. However, when a title forgoes everything that makes a video slot what it is and tries to ride on the strong name of its publisher, we have to change our tune accordingly”

It seems like the older we get, the worse off the larger companies get. NetEnt’s titles are notoriously bad when it comes to pays without insane luck, and now Microgaming is having their own fall of grace. Poke the Guy seems to be their second go at something radically different, the way they offered Mega Money Rush, which also threw away the concept of reels and regular gameplay to offer something that was very difficult to even qualify as a slot game. Unlike that title, however, Poke the Guy has none of the polish or the interesting gameplay.
Launched in May 2018, Poke the Guy has no reels or rows that gamblers could use, nor does it have any special features on offer either. Upon booting up the title, you will have the ability to adjust your wager and choose what to throw at the guy who is constantly bouncing about the place and you can also pick whether or not you want quick spins or if you, for whatever reason, want to slog through this experience.
The game’s theme is oddly fitting. Just like in real life, you will have provocative people trying to bait you into making the bad decision, it seems like Microgaming’s logic was to make the Guy so annoying that you’d just keep trying to hit him out of frustration, which, by extent, would mean the company would mooch some cash off of you. As there are no paylines, there are also no coin denominations. You can just bet anywhere between $0.01 up to $30 per spin.
There are also no game icons for you to collect or for wins to be awarded by. The only thing that pays is when you throw your weapon of choice and hit the guy. The weapons you can use are a rubber duck, knife, ice cream, piranha and a giant tree, all of which produce satisfactory pained guy faces when they land a hit.
There are also no special features at all to help gamblers get to their desired winnings, either. Regular wins can flow from 2x up to 18x, and there’s a major jump to 500x which is supposed to be the game’s jackpot. That said, the fast gameplay and the fact you have absolutely no control over anything makes it very difficult to justify even trying this title. The last time Microgaming gave this a try in Mega Money Rush, you could control the vehicle to better secure your position. Here, it’s entirely random, with no features or anything to make it interesting.

"This just goes to show that no matter how big you get, you can still have absolutely spectacular failures. Microgaming has simply failed to deliver on every front possible with this title and it’s quite frankly insulting that they thought anyone would find this an acceptable experience."
