“While we understand slots can’t always go for photorealism, there’s a difference between your game having a cartoony look and outright being a cartoon.”

Samurai are a concept that need no introduction. Badass Japanese soldiers of legend, which, much like medieval European knights, were far less glamorous than the stories they made up about themselves would tell you. For a great deal of time, samurai were protectors of those who could afford to pay them and they were paramount in the tumultuous period of Japanese history which would finally lead to the islands first unifying under an Emperor. We expected the Microgaming’s latest release to glorify these warriors of old, but while the publisher is certainly bring those legends back to life, they’re doing it in an unorthodox way.
Launched in March 2018, Samurai Ken is a 5-reel, 3-row video slot with 20 fixed paylines. Every winning combination sticks around for a re-spin and this keeps going as long as new wins are added to the existing combination. Once no more symbols are being added to the winning combination, the bonus ends. On top of that, there are several other special features included to spice things up.
When it comes to dangerous mythical creatures like dragons, it is better to be safe than sorry, so make sure you check your wager before venturing further. The coin denomination goes from $0.01 up to $2.00, and the bet can be set anywhere between $0.20 up to $40 per spin. Thanks to a wide range of betting options provided by Microgaming, both high rollers and lower end gamblers can enjoy some fun spins.
The list of game icons is also impressively diverse, with coins, katanas, helmets and several battle scene icons that represent the clash between the samurai tiger and the dragon, such as the dragon’s eyes, claws and hoard of gold and treasure. We’re going to be honest, Samurai Ken has great animations, but it just doesn’t work for us. It feels like Microgaming’s artists want to make a cartoon instead of a game. There’s a difference between cartoony graphics, and being a cartoon with fully animated battle sequences between an anthropomorphic tiger and a dragon.
Not all visuals are given the same love and attention. Wilds are just white text atop a red background which is done in tiger-stripe fashion. Wilds only appear during free spins and two of them appearing at once triggers a re-spin. Scatters are set on a banner, with white text reading Scatter on top of it. They appear only in the base game on the first, third and fifth reel. Winning three at the same time activates the free spins.
Unlike most other titles, Samurai Ken doesn’t have a fixed amount of free spins. Instead, how many you win is determined by how the battle between the tiger and dragon goes, which means you could play as little as two or three. Or, you could maybe even beat our personal best of 25 extra turns. Ultimately, the challenge falls upon you and your luck.

"As much as we didn’t like it visually, we enjoyed the gameplay immensely. Unlimited free spins and re-spins on nearly every turn offer great winning potential, which you should experience if you can get over the cartoon visuals."
