Juan Carlos Garrido has urged Villarreal to remain vigilant despite their 5-1 rout of FC Twente in the Europa League quarter-final.
The Spaniards are in a favourable position ahead of the second leg in Holland next Thursday after a Nilmar brace and goals from Carlos Marchena, Borja Valero and Giuseppe Rossi helped them to a near-unassailable deficit.
The Yellow Submarines coach, while pleased with the resounding result, insisted the Dutch champions were still in contention for a place in the next stage.
“There is still the second leg, but the step we have taken is very great,” Garrido told Spanish sports daily Marca. “The reality is that there is another game.”
Tarnishing the result somewhat, centre-back Gonzalo Rodriguez has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after tests revealed his left fibula was fractured after a robust challenge ffrom Twente forward Marc Janko.
“It (the injury) was something unpleasant and should not have happened.”
“(Marc) Janko made a bad tackle, but we have the scoreline in our favour.”
