Troubled former England footballer Paul Gascoigne was on Thursday given nine weeks to file his late tax returns or face bankruptcy.

Gascoigne, who was once believed to be worth 14 million pounds (17 million euros, 24 million dollars), is being pursued by British tax authorities over estimated unpaid liabilities of 200,000 pounds.

At London's Bankruptcy Court, Gascoigne's lawyer Craig Montgomery successfully secured an adjournment of the case until January 9.

Montgomery told the court that Gascoigne's financial affairs were complex, involving interests overseas, and time was needed to submit returns and sell assets to meet his liabilities.

Outside court, the lawyer said: “There is no suggestion that he doesn't have the funds to meet his tax liabilities. It is just a question of having time to make the returns.

“It takes time to work out where everything is.”

Gascoigne, 41, has been involved in a series of incidents this year, the latest in September when he was arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage.

He has battled alcoholism and depression since his playing days and was sectioned under British mental health laws this year.

Gascoigne — known to fans as “Gazza” — made 57 appearances for England, and played for clubs including Newcastle, Tottenham, Lazio in Italy and Rangers.

Considered one of the most talented players English football has ever produced, he is best known for his exploits in the 1990 World Cup finals in Italy where he helped his country to reach the semi-finals.
