Genoa have moved to confirm reports that they attempted to sign Fiorentina winger Alessio Cerci in January.
The promising midfielder was tipped to leave Artemio Franchi in January after losing his starting place in the side.
Despite being one of the best players for Viola in the first part of the season, Cerci was relegated to the bench by new boss Delio Rossi and he was expected to leave the club in search of first team football.
Genoa sporting director Stefano Capozucca has now revealed that the Rossoblu were on the verge of signing the 24-year-old.
“There was a possibility to take Cerci,” Rossoblu sporting director Stefano Capozucca told Radio Blu on Friday afternoon. “However, the deal wasn’t finalised.”
Alessio Cerci has exploded at Artemio Franchi soon after making a switch from Roma in August 2010, scoring 7 goals in just 17 starts for Viola in his first season at the club.
The player started this season brightly under Sinisa Mihajlovic, but was unable to hold on to a starting place and he was close to leaving the club in January.
