Hamburger SV’s elimination by Osnabrück is without a doubt the biggest upset in Wednesday’s German Cup action.

Hamburg expected a relatively easy task at 3.Liga side Osnabrück, but soon realized that it wouldn’t be a walk in the park as the first half went by without goals.

Niels Hansen even put Osnabrück ahead in the 52nd minute and Benjamin Siegert made it 2-0 in minute 67.

But it looked like Hamburg woke up just in time. Mladen Petric pulled one back in the 77th minute and a converted penalty from Piotr Trochowski leveled the score near full time.

Hamburg then went ahead through Guy Demel in the ninth minute of extra time but Henning Grieneisen equalized in the 116th to force a penalty shoot-out. Tesche and Petric missed from the spot, allowing Osnabrück to win the shoot-out 4-2 and advance to the next round.

Defending league champions VfL Wolfsburg were knocked out by FC Köln, 3-2. Manasseh Ishiaku (2) and Sebastian Freis scored for the hosts, and goals from Edin Dzeko and Sascha Riether weren’t enough for Wolfsburg to avoid defeat.
