Germany great Schult calls it a day

Germany great Almuth Schult has called time on her playing career.

Schult is an icon of Germany’s women’s national team, having played a key role in their Olympic and Euros triumphs in 2016 and 2013 respectively.

The 34-year-old, who played 66 times for her country, was also part of the squad that reached the final of Euro 2022.

She left Kansas City Current in December, and with a fourth child on the way later this year, Schult has elected to call it a day.

“It was always clear to me that I would be available for the national team as long as my competitive sports career lasted,” she said.

Olympic gold medalist, European champion, and a true icon.

“It has always filled me with pride to represent my country and to hear the anthem.

“A career is marked by ups and downs, and I’m happy about every single one of them. They have shaped me and taught me.”

Schult also helped Wolfsburg win four Frauen-Bundesliga titles, as well as the DFB-Pokal Frauen five times.

She counts one Women’s Champions League title among her honours, too.
