Gerrard still vital to Liverpool’s hopes of success this season

Liverpool captain Steve Gerrard has signed a contract extension at Anfield that should keep him at the club for the rest of his career.

Liverpool’s talisman has had a stop-start season but scored the crucial goal in Liverpool’s 1-0 Carling Cup first leg semi-final victory over Manchester City on Wednesday night.

Important

Even though he hasn’t featured as much as he would have liked this season Steven Gerrard is still the player that makes the Reds tick.

They are a different team with him in their engine room. He seems to give everybody a lift when he is on the pitch and when his teammates are in need of inspiration he so often produces.

Liverpool have found goals hard to come by this season but his return could be the catalyst to the goals flowing again. With Luis Suarez suspended Liverpool have to rely on big Andy Carroll up front and Gerrard is a clever enough footballer to know how to link up with the big Geordie.

This link-up could be vital with Suarez out for the next couple of months. Liverpool haven’t seen the best of Carroll yet and maybe Gerrard’s return to the fold could aide the striker.

Over

Earlier this season there were rumours here on Merseyside that Steven Gerrard may have to hang his boots up. The Liverpool star had been struggling with a host of niggling injuries and he was believed to be getting frustrated.

However Steven Gerrard has always been a fighter and he wasn’t going to give up on his career so easy and fought his way back to fitness.

Loyal

Steve Gerrard has always been loyal to the Liverpool cause despite there being interest from elsewhere. He has always dreamed of winning the Premier League title with his beloved Reds but he has never quite achieved it.

Gerrard could have moved on to Chelsea when the Blues were the dominant force in English football under Jose Mourinho but Gerrard just couldn’t bring himself to leave the club he loves. He sacrificed person glory for the sake of Liverpool.

Respect

Even though I am a Everton fan I have a begrudging respect for Steven Gerrard as a footballer. I think most English football fans would admit that he is a wonderful footballer, even a lot of Manchester United fans.

He has achieved a lot in the game but the one thing that frustrates me about Steven Gerrard is that he has never really found his best form for England. He seems like a different player when he puts on that Three Lions shirt. It’s a real shame. I just wish he would show as much passion for England as he does for Liverpool.

Europe

Liverpool really do need a fit Steven Gerrard if they are going sustain a realistic challenge for the Champions League spots this season. He is the player that drives the team forward from midfield and makes things happen.

When Luis Suarez returns I can see him having a fruitful partnership with the Liverpool skipper. They are both clever footballers and that could be the key to Liverpool qualifying for Europe’s elite competition once again.

Steven Gerrard will go down as one of Liverpool’s greatest ever players but don’t write him off just yet he still has a good few years left in him to produce more moments of magic.

Can Steven Gerrard inspire Liverpool to a top four spot?
