Steven Gerrard is keen on taking Liverpool’s Joe Gomez to Aston Villa this winter, according to Birmingham Live. In fact, Villa have apparently already contacted Gerrard’s former club with an offer for the versatile defender, but Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp wants Gomez to stay put.
Having suffered a serious knee injury which ruled him out for the large part of last season, the England international fell down the pecking order at the club, with Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate all firmly ahead. Gomez can also play on the right defensive flank, but that role belongs exclusively to Trent Alexander-Arnold.
However, Klopp doesn’t want to lose the 24-year-old for two reasons. He doesn’t want his squad to get any thinner as Liverpool battle on four fronts in the second half of the season, aiming to win each. Quite apart from that, he still sees Gomez as a part of Liverpool’s future, possibly to form a long-term partnership with Konate one day soon with Van Dijk and Matip both 30 years old.
