Liverpool captain Gerrard is a major doubt for the team’s trip to Sunderland this weekend as scans reveal his groin injury to be worse than feared.
England’s finest midfielder suffered the groin injury during the defeat match in Ukraine and was also ruled out of final World Cup qualifier against Belarus. He limped out of the training session with the rest of the squad on the eve of the Belarus match.
”He didn’t finish training because the pain was the same as yesterday. He’s going back to Liverpool,” says Fabio Capello. The scan report revealed some minor tearing of the fibres in the adductor muscle, and a minor strain. And since the player has suffered injuries three times in the past calendar year, his selection for upcoming matches is a major doubt.
Gerrard’s was a very prominent player and his absence would be a major blow for England with Wayne Rooney, the Manchester United forward, already sidelined with a calf injury.
Although it is believed that it was Gerrard’s decision to stay on for the training, Benitez might be questioned for his negligence in not sending back the major player for further analysis of his injury.
Liverpool has a tough week with their Premier League and Champions’ League matches against Lyon and Manchester United lined up.
