On Wednesday night, two of the giants of the European game meet at the Nou Camp, as Barcelona host Real Madrid in El Clasico. This time around the two teams are neck and neck in the race for the Spanish crown.
Could be a decisive game in the race for La Liga
Although we are only in December, Wednesday’s Clasico could well be a decisive one in the race for the Spanish top-flight title. The two games between the pair of Spanish giants can often prove pivotal to the destination of the Spanish top-flight title.
There is so little between the two teams at the minute, that a victory for either could prove to swing the momentum the winner’s ways. In fact, at the moment the pair are level on points, but Barcelona have a superior goal difference of just two.
A win for Real Madrid, which they are odds of 10/3 to achieve would shift the balance in their favour, as Los Blancos would then not only be two points ahead but also have the potentially vital head-to-head record on their side.
However, Barcelona are favourites to win the game at odds of 8/11 and move three points clear of their great rivals in the table.
Battle of the sharpshooters
Unsurprisingly, Barcelona and Real Madrid are the two scorers in the Spanish top-flight this season, with the Catalan giants having scored ten more goals than their rivals from the Spanish capital. It would be ridiculous if the big two in Spain were not the top scorers considering the embarrassment of riches of attacking options at their disposal.
The top three scorers in La Liga are from the big two. Argentinian magician Lionel Messi on 12 goals is joint-top scorer alongside Real Madrid counterpart Karim Benzema, who is enjoying something of a renaissance when it comes to scoring goals this season.
The third leading goalscorer unsurprising is Barcelona’s, Luis Suarez. The trio look like the most likely players to make an attacking difference at the Nou Camp. The likes of Gareth Bale and Antoine Griezmann will also be looking to make that decisive attacking impact too.
With both teams so good going forward, the odds of both teams to score of 1/ 2 were slightly surprising, especially as Barcelona have not been great defensively at times. However, the fact that only Atletico Madrid have a better defensive record this season than Los Blancos may be the reason for those tempting odds.
Surely this clash will be full of goals? It would be highly surprising if it isn’t, as there has been over 2.5 goals scored in four of the last six Clasico’s.
A great spectacle whatever happens
There is so little between the two teams in this game that it is hard to predict who will come out on top. It is worth noting that Real Madrid have failed to beat Barcelona in the last six meetings between the pair while suffering four defeats while doing so.
As a neutral, it is a fantastic game to watch whatever happens. Clasicos tend to have everything, as it truly is two of the best teams that European football has to offer competing against each other for not just points, but also prestige.
The game seems to capture the imaginations of more people than most club games in the sport. With so many watching, I am sure that the two teams will deliver an excellent match, which could prove to be important to the destination of the Spanish title at the end of the season.
Who will come out on top between Spain’s big two on Wednesday night?
