Giggs signs on for season 21 at Old Trafford

Ryan Giggs will play for Manchester United for at least one more season after extending his contract by a year on Friday.

The veteran winger will begin his 21st season for United in August.

“All I’ve ever wanted to do is play for United and I’ve been lucky enough to do that for 20 years,” he said.

“It is great to know I’m still contributing to the team’s success and I feel I’ve got a lot to offer on and off the pitch.”

“This is an exciting time to be involved with so many good young players coming through.”

Giggs, who has played more than 800 times for United including 600 English Premier League games, is still a key part of manager Sir Alex Ferguson’s plans.

It was his through ball that set up Nani for United’s opener in last weekend’s Manchester derby victory, his 17th league appearance of the season.

In total, Giggs, 37, has played 862 times in all competitions for United, having made his debut in the 1990/91 season, and scored more than 150 goals.

“You run out of words to describe Ryan Giggs,” said Ferguson. “He is a marvellous player and a wonderful man.”

“To have the desire and the ability to play at the top level in such a physically demanding position at his age requires a special person.”

“He is still turning in man-of-the-match performances and his experience is so vital for the younger players in the squad.”

Giggs’ contract extension will keep him at Old Trafford until June 2012.
