Tottenham Hotspur have finally reached an agreement that will bring Ajax Amsterdam captain Jan Vertonghen to White Hart Lane, according to the club’s official website.
As always, the move is subject to Vertonghen passing a medical, which is scheduled for sometime this week.
“We are delighted to announce that we have reached agreement with Ajax for the transfer of Jan Vertonghen, subject to a medical,” Tottenham Hotspur Football Club revealed in an official statement.
Since arriving in north London, new Spurs boss André Villas-Boas has brought Gylfi Sigurdsson and now Jan Vertonghen to White Hart Lane.
Spurs’ interest in the Belgium international originated with Harry Redknapp at the helm, but according to Vertonghen, the managerial switch did not make him second-guess his decision to join the north London club.
“I heard that Harry Redknapp really wanted me to play for Tottenham, but now it’s Andre Villas-Boas,” said the Belgian. “To me, that doesn’t matter.
“I just want to play for the club and I hope I can please the fans at the club.”
The English Premier League is now home to a bevy of Belgian stars, including the likes of Eden Hazard (Chelsea), Romelu Lukaku (Chelsea), Moussa Dembélé (Fulham), Thomas Vermaelen (Arsenal), Marouane Fellaini (Everton) and Vincent Kompany (Manchester City).
You can now add Vertonghen to that list.
Giggs to captain Team GB
Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has been named captain of Team GB for the London 2012 Summer Olympics.
Team GB manager Stuart Pearce, who left the infamous David Beckham out of the GB squad, characterized Giggs as a “fantastic professional” and “standout captain” following his decision.
Giggs tallied two goals and eight assists in 25 league appearances (14 starts) for the Red Devils last season. In addition, he bagged one goal and two assists in three UEFA Champions League matches, while also netting once in the English Carling Cup.
The 38-year-old has not represented Wales since the 2008-09 season. In fact, Cristiano Ronaldo was still a Manchester United in 2008-09.
Team GB have been bracked with Uruguay, Senegal and the United Arab Emirates in Group A.
Stuart Pearce’s side will fact Senegal in their London 2012 opener on 26 July.
Now then, here is the final 18-man Team GB Squad:
Goalkeepers: Jack Butland, Jason Steele
Defenders: Micah Richards, Ryan Bertrand, Steven Caulker, Craig Dawson, Neil Taylor, James Tomkins
Midfielders: Joe Allen, Ryan Giggs, Tom Cleverley, Jack Cork, Aaron Ramsey, Danny Rose
Forwards: Craig Bellamy, Scott Sinclair, Marvin Sordell, Daniel Sturridge
