According to Sky Italia, World Cup winning striker Alberto Gilardino is set to retire from professional football. The 36 year old has had a fascinating career that has spanned the last two decades, and included him playing for major Italian clubs such as Parma, Fiorentina and Genoa. Of course, the biggest stint of his career by far was when he was with AC Milan, where he was able to become a Champions League winner less than a year after helping Italy to World Cup glory.
In the latter stages of his career he bounced around a series of clubs, picking up a reputation as being something of a journeyman. In the grand scheme of his time in the game, though, he’ll undoubtedly be remembered as one of the true greats when it comes to Italian forwards – if only due to his involvement in the World Cup triumph.
As noted by Sky Italia, “The violin has stopped playing”.
