Olivier Giroud must be sick of the sight of Alexandre Lacazette. Not only do the pair compete for the starting role up top for the French national team, but the latter’s move to Premier League giants Arsenal in the summer has forced Giroud onto the domestic bench too.
His lack of game time has not gone unnoticed either, and
Sky Sports report that France’s assistant coach Guy Stephan has warned the forward that his lack of minutes could cost him a spot at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
Stephan told reporters, “Olivier has been very good for us in the last few months and he has a very high ratio in terms of the amount of games played to goals but now he must play more.”
The Frenchman had been heavily linked with a move to Everton in the summer, and with the Toffees now struggling for goals that move could well be something that would suit both parties. Giroud would certainly be able to establish some more consistent game time, while the Merseyside club would be getting a prolific and proven Premier League goal scorer.
It remains to be seen whether the forward will heed Stephan’s advice, but while Lacazette is at Arsenal it is unlikely that Giroud will surpass him as the number one option.
