Over the past eleven years, Shay Given has made the spot between the posts at St. James’ Park his own. Over the span of the same eleven years, he has also made a name for himself as a top class Premier League goalkeeper. However, he has been perfectly comfortable in Newcastle as opposed to chasing a big-money move to another Premier League club.
At the beginning of the summer, though, it was thought that the time had come for Shay Given to move on. His eleventh season at Newcastle had been blighted by injury and, in his absence, Steve Harper has also made a name for himself. For the first time in eleven years at Newcastle, Given was no longer the undisputed number one.
The Lancashire Evening Post reported roughly two weeks ago that Arsenal was set to make a move for Newcastle’s goalkeeper. But now, Given has move to quash those rumours, claiming he is perfectly settled at Newcastle.
“I’ve been with Newcastle since 1997 and I’ll soon be getting a Geordie twang. It’s a great football club with fantastic fans, so I have no reason to leave.
“I have three years left on my contract and I am very settled in the North East. I see myself staying at Newcastle for the rest of my career,” Said he, according to Setanta Sports.
