Given keen on Villa exit

Shay Given is hopeful to call time on his Aston Villa nightmare when the transfer window reopens in January, the Metro understands.

The Republic of Ireland international has been frozen out by manager Paul Lambert due to the form of Brad Guzan, while he has not even made the bench in any of the Midlands club’s games this season following the arrival of England U19 international Jed Steer.

His last club appearance was a 2-1 FA Cup defeat to Millwall, while he has not featured internationally since last summer’s European Championships in Poland and Ukraine.

He is currently second behind Robbie Keane in the list of all time international appearances for Ireland, but is unlikely to add to his tally of 125 caps if he continues to be absent from match-day squads.

Liverpool were linked with a move for the 37 year old, who has three years remaiing on his contract at Villa Park, during the summer but a move didn’t materialise.
