Godoy Cruz, Estudiantes get crucial wins

(GSM) – Godoy Cruz moved back into second place in the Clausura in Argentina on Sunday with a 2-0 win over Vélez, while Estudiantes stayed in the hunt despite a 1-1 draw against Banfield.

Godoy Cruz came into the day six points off the pace of leaders Independiente, and it took them until the 71st minute to break the deadlock as substiute Rodrigo Salinas scored just moments after coming on.

That spurred on the home side, which made it 2-0 just two minutes later on César Carranza’s goal.

Meanwhile, Estudiantes remain six points off the pace with seven matches to play, although Mauro Boselli got them off to a good start against Banfield with a 15th-minute goal.

That was cancelled out, however, when Marcelo Quinteros scored back for Banfield five minutes before the restart.

Elsewhere, Boca Juniors are third from bottom after they were beaten 2-1 at home by 19th-placed Rosario Central.

Adrián de León fired the visitors in front at La Bombonera in the 43rd minute, but Osvaldo Gaitán equalized for Boca in the 61st.

Rosario, however, stunned the home crowd in the 87th minute as Milton Caraglio bagged the winner.

Juan Román Riquelme picked up a red card just moments later in frustration for Boca.
