Bayern Munich signing Mario Goetze is in danger of missing the start of next season due to a thigh injury.
The playmaker, who signed for the Bavarian giants from Borussia Dortmund for a fee believed to be 37 million euros, picked up a thigh problem during his former team’s Champions League semi-final second leg against Real Madrid.
It was initially hoped Goetze would recover in time to play in the final of the competition against Bayern, but he suffered a relapse of the injury and is understood to have ruptured the muscle.
The 21-year-old is unlikely to recover in time to join his new club in their preparations for the 2013/14 campaign under new coach Pep Guardiola.
Goetze emerged as one of Juergen Klopp’s key players at the Westfalenstadion, helping the club to their 2010/11 and 2011/12 Bundesliga titles, as well as the 2012 DFB-Pokal.
He scored 16 goals and set up 15 more during the course of the 2012/13 campaign, as Dortmund finished as runners-up to Bayern in the Bundesliga and the UEFA Champions League.
