(GSM) – England striker Jermain Defoe insists that the ‘golden generation’ could still play at the 2014 World Cup. Despite this summer’s disappointment in South Africa, Defoe believes the current set-up can still play in 4 year’s time at the grandest stage in international football.

England stars Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Ashley Cole and John Terry will be well into their 30s by the tournament, set in Brazil, kicks off.

Despite England manager Fabio Capello being under severe pressure to overhaul the aging squad and introduce young names, Defoe insists that the players can be in a good shape to compete at the world stage in 4 years.

“I am sure the players will look at it and think in four years they are not getting any younger,” he told Sky Sports News.

“But if you look after your body and keep yourself fit I don’t see why they can play in the next World Cup.”

Defoe has expressed his admiration for Adam Johnson’s abilities and tipped the young Manchester City winger to break into the squad.

“Johnno in training was brilliant and watching him at Man City I thought he made the difference – he is a great player and great skill,” he said.
