Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez said he is not obsessed with breaking the Bundesliga goalscoring record.
Gomez, 26, has been in sensational form this season, with his 16 goals in as many top-flight matches helping him win Munich’s Sportsman of the Year 2011 award from the readers of Abendzeitung Munchen with 26 per cent of votes.
Gomez looks to be on course to reach the heights of Gerd Muller, who holds the Bundesliga record for most goals in one season with 40 strikes, but the Germany international stressed he is not paying attention to individual success.
“This is not a goal that I have set for myself,” he told Abendzeitung Munchen.
“For me, it is much more important to score consistently over the years.”
“I prefer five consecutive years with 20 goals than one with 40 and then only eight.”
The former Stuttgart striker’s contract expires at the end of next season, but he said he was not thinking about leaving the Bavarian giants.
“I currently have no ambitions for a change,” Gomez said.
“I am at one of the best clubs in the world, why would I want to go somewhere else?”
