Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez’s grandfather has revealed that the 26-year-old rejected an offer to join Real Madrid.
The former Stuttgart man has been in fine form this season, scoring 37 goals in all competitions, leading Bayern to reward his contribution with a contract extension earlier in the week which tied him to club until 2016.
“Madrid wanted him… but he didn’t want to come. He says he’s very comfortable at Bayern, especially now that the coach is placing his trust in him,” Jose Gomez said.
“He has just renewed until 2016 and is very happy. And his grandmother and I are as well, because things seem to be going really well for him.”
Bayern will take on Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-finals later this month and Jose, who has lived in Spain all his life, admits his allegiances on the matter are mixed.
“I think things will be quite hard for Bayern, they are good, but I think Madrid are better. I want Madrid to win because they are a Spanish team, but another part of me wants Mario to win because he’s my grandson,” Gomez snr said.
