German striker Mario Gomez has revealed that he rejected a move to Real Madrid in favour of a switch to Fiorentina.
The 28-year-old became one of the hottest commodities in the summer transfer market when he expressed his desire to leave Bayern Munich and he did not have a shortage of offers.
Gomez ultimately opted to join Serie A high-flyers Fiorentina, but only after rejecting an opportunity to sign for Real Madrid.
“Ancelotti was interested,” Gomez told Kicker magazine. “I was flattered, because my whole family are fans of Real Madrid.
“I thanked him for his interest and told my agent that I just wanted to go to Florence.
“For me it was clear – I wanted to keep giving everything again properly and not to just play half the games in a top team and obtain many titles. I want to play Sunday, Wednesday, Sunday.”
Gomez seems to have made the right career choice as he has started all four Viola’s competitive matches this term, scoring two goals in the process.
He has already established an excellent attacking partnership with Giuseppe Rossi and is tipped to fight for the top goalscorer title in Serie A.
Prior to arriving at Artemio Franchi, Gomez had established himself as one of Bundesliga most prolific strikers, bagging 75 goals in 115 league appearances.
