Argentine star Gonzalo Higuain has put pen to paper a new contract that will see him stay at the Bernabeu till 2016.  The news puts an end to speculation regarding Higuain’s future, with reports having linked the striker with a move away from Los Merengues.

Higuain was Real Madrid’s top scorer in La Liga last season. The 22 year old scored twenty seven league goals last season, seven behind Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, and one ahead of team mate Cristiano Ronaldo.

Higuain was also called up to the Argentine national squad by Diego Maradona last year and scored on debut against Peru. He is currently a part of the 23 member Albicelestes squad that will compete in the 2010 World Cup.

Higuain joined Real Madrid from River Plate in December 2006 for a fee of 13 million euros.
