Gordon: ´I´ve never once said I want to leave Newcastle´

Anthony Gordon insists he is happy at Newcastle United and does not understand where rumours linking him with a move away from the club are coming from.

Gordon caused a stir earlier this month when he made a talking gesture with his hand after scoring in the Magpies’ 3-3 draw with Liverpool, the club he was linked with a move to.

The England international has managed just four goal involvements (three goals, one assist) this term, but will be hoping to improve that this weekend against Leicester City.

Gordon, however, insisted he has never wanted to leave St James’ Park since making his move from Everton, but did say that recent speculation has affected his form.

He told Sky Sports: “I love it here, I’ve said it plenty of times.

“I think with the speculation, people assume it is all correct when you’ve never heard from me once that I am unhappy. I love everyone here. I love playing football here.

“The celebration was just that I’d heard so much talk this year about my future, where I’m going, where I want to go, without anyone actually asking me.

“It took me away from enjoying my football this year, and I think that is where the inconsistency comes from, because I’ve got caught in that a little bit.

“I just want to play football especially for Newcastle.”

Despite his recent slump, Gordon has been a vital figure for Eddie Howe’s side since his arrival at the club.

Only Alexander Isak (32) has been involved in more Premier League goals for Newcastle than Gordon (25) since the start of last season.

The 23-year-old has created more chances (86) than any of his team-mates in the top-flight during that time and has attempted the most dribbles (157).

It is success for the club he is prioritising over personal accolades, however.

Gordon said: “If we can win a trophy for this club, it would mean the absolute world. Obviously the league means so much to us because all of our players want to play in Europe, we want to play at that elite level.

“But for me, since I joined – and it will probably always be until it happens – the main priority is to win a trophy.”
