West Ham manager Avram Grant is delighted that his side are starting to get the rewards for their form.
Grant watched his side defeat Wolves 2-0 at Upton Park on Saturday courtesy of second-half goals from Freddie Sears and a Ronald Zubar own-goal.
West Ham are attempting to become just the second side in English Premier League history to avoid relegation after being bottom at Christmas, as West Bromwich Albion did under Bryan Robson in the 2004-05 season.
After the triumph, Grant saw his side move to 15th on the table and his relief at escaping the relegation zone was evident.
“We are very happy because for a long time we have felt that we are doing the right things,” Grant told Sky Sports.
“Even when we had a lot of problems, we did the right things, we played the football that we wanted to play and we didn’t get the reward that we wanted in terms of points.”
“I think this week – and we have spoke about this before – we were more efficient and, of course, it is a good week for us.”
“You saw from our attacking football we scored two goals today, we (also) created three good chances and we deserved to win.”
Grant will not get carried away by West Ham’s newfound lofty position on the table, having been bottom of the Premier League for long periods this season.
The former Chelsea boss confirmed he will be look to made additions to his squad in a busy January transfer window.
“We are trying to do some business because our squad is short and we have a lot of games in the next four or five months,” he said.
“Any player that can improve the team we will take (a look at).”
Wolves were the team to replace West Ham at the foot of the table – and their manager Mick McCarthy bemoaned simple mistakes and the impact they had on the game.
Wolves were unlucky not to score early in the second half before a freak own goal changed the complexion of the match.
“It was our mistakes that have cost us,” McCarthy said.
“I can’t criticise them for lack of effort or for the level of performance because I think that we’ve played well. But it’s the errors – you make a couple of errors in a game and we’ve been punished and when we’ve had our chances we didn’t manage to punish them.”
But despite being bottom and seeing their relegation rivals climb out of the relegation zone, McCarthy remained upbeat.
“We’re not relegated tonight are we?” he said.
“I’d never doubt that (that his side can pull clear) and we’re two points away from safety.”
“There’s plenty of teams still sweating it out. West Ham have had a good result today, they’ve had a good Christmas but it does come in fits and starts at times, the good parts. We’ve had three wins out of six, we’ve got Chelsea coming up next, but who knows?”
