Avram Grant believes West Ham’s thumping 4-0 win over Manchester United in the Carling Cup could prove the turning point of his team’s season.
The Hammers picked up their second win in three days with their upset victory over United at Upton Park on Tuesday, consigning their distinguished opposition to their first loss of the season and sending them out of the competition.
Doubles to Jonathan Spector and Carlton Cole would have come as some warmth to West Ham fans on a snowy evening in East London.
Now in the Carling Cup’s semi-finals but still three points from safety and rooted to the bottom of the English Premier League table despite Saturday’s 3-1 win over Wigan, manager Grant believes the win can spur his side onto more success.
“It’s a new team with many new players and each game we are better. I’m very pleased by this and I hope we continue winning,” he told Sky Sports after the game.
“If we continue to perform, continue to focus and continue as individuals and as a team then we can do it.”
“I’m not surprised (with the performance) because I’ve been with the players a long time and in some games here, (like) the second half against Newcastle and the whole game against Liverpool, we’ve played well.”
“Today we played fantastic and also scored and we kept a clean sheet. So I’m very happy. I thought we could win, but not by that score.”
“It’s very special. To perform like this against the best team today in the country and score four goals, what more can I ask?”
