Talks between Newcastle United and Lyon over midfielder Clement Grenier are continuing, according to manager Alan Pardew.
France international Grenier is seen as an ideal replacement for his countryman Yohan Cabaye – who left for Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday – at St James’ Park.
And with the transfer window set to close on Friday, Newcastle boss Pardew confirmed negotiations are taking place between the clubs over a prospective deal.
“It’s ongoing,” he said on Thursday.
“I have not heard if the deal is finalised or finished so it is ongoing as far as I am aware.”
Pardew added that the signing of Grenier would be a major boost for the club, and would excite fans at St James’ Park.
“He has tremendous creative and technical ability,” the former West Ham manager continued.
“He’s a player fans would love to see at this club.”
