Former Tottenham Hotspur and Stuttgart coach Christian Gross is being lined up to replace Felix Magath at struggling German side Schalke 04, according to a report to be published on Thursday.

Weekly German newspaper Die Zeit says the Ruhr valley club decided to look for an alternative to coach Magath after the Royal Blues were hammered 5-0 by Kaiserslautern last Saturday.

Despite having qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League, Schalke are 15th in the league table and last weekend’s humiliating defeat at Kaiserslautern has forced Schalke’s bosses to look elsewhere, claims Die Zeit.

Schalke’s sporting director Horst Heldt reportedly proposed Gross’ name after working with the ex-Spurs manager last season at Stuttgart.

Gross, 56, was sacked by Stuttgart on October 13 after only ten months in office with his side struggling in the German league.

Schalke face Bayern Munich on Saturday in the German league.
