Guardiola proud of Bayern despite draw

Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola was delighted with his side, despite dropping points in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Bayer Leverkusen.

Although Bayern took the lead in the first half through Toni Kroos, they were almost immediately pegged back by a goal from Sidney Sam, assisted by an error from Manuel Neuer in the visitors’ goal.

At the other end, Bernd Leno was in no mood to be beaten again as he pulled off a string of fine saves to rescue a point for Sami Hyypia’s side.

Despite failing to win, Borussia Dortmund’s defeat by Borussia Monchengladbach earlier in the day meant that Bayern went one point at the top of the Bundesliga, much to Guardiola’s delight.

“Congratulations to my players. I am proud of our performance,” he told Sky Sports Deutschland. “We have played very, very well.

“I do not know what to say. We have done everything, but we are in first place.

“Nevertheless, we have not won. But that’s football. Leno is a very good goalkeeper.”

Bayern captain Philipp Lahm agreed that his side deserved to win the match, and was happy to see his team-mates carry their attacking prowess over from Wednesday night’s 3-1 demolition of Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League.

“Despite clear opportunities we have failed to score,” said Lahm. “With the game itself, we can be happy, we were clearly superior.

“We really played well in stages we were and we clearly had the upper hand against a good team like Leverkusen, who had few opportunities.

“The mix between attack and defence was good again.”
