Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has revealed that Ilkay Gundogan does not want to sign a new contract at the moment.
This situation seems to have been going on for some time, with the midfielder expressing his intention not to rush into a new deal about a month ago.
Guardiola also said that if the situation remains as it is, the 28-year-old will have to go, hinting that it might happen this summer. The Premier League champions aren’t likely to allow the player to enter the last year of his contract, which expires in the summer of 2020, and potentially open the door for him to leave for free next year.
The Catalan has, however, expressed his hope that it won’t come to that and Gundogan will decide to stay, but at the moment, his future at the Etihad is in grave doubt.
The German arrived to the north-west of England in 2016. Mostly due to injuries, but also the great form of Fernandinho, David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva, he hasn’t been able to secure a place in the starting XI, and that is a likely reason for his reluctance to commit his long-term future to City again.
